Backstreet Boys have abandoned plans for a joint tour with The Spice Girls, admitting that the idea has “fizzled out”.

Singer AJ McLean admitted the idea for a joint tour had been discussed, but that it had been shelved. McLean told US radio station 103.5 KTU: “From what I’ve heard, The Spice Girls want to do their own tour. It’s their 20th anniversary, we’re back in the studio making a new album. So everyone is doing their own thing.”

The Spice Girls haven’t officially confirmed any dates on their tour, and the line-up for any anniversary shows has also yet to be finalised. Victoria Beckham has ruled herself out, saying she wants to concentrate on her fashion range.

The Spice Girls last toured in 2008, after comeback single ‘Headlines (Friendship Never Ends)’ reached No 11. The tour was abandoned early in February due to “personal and family commitments” following poor reviews. They reunited again in 2012 to sing ‘Wannabe’ and ‘Spice Up Your Life’. Their musical Viva Forever closed in 2013 seven months after it opened at West End theatre Piccadilly.

McLean said he hoped there would be a joint tour with The Spice Girls eventually. He said: “God willing, maybe down the road it could happen.” Backstreet Boys’ most recent album was 2013’s ‘In A World Like This’.
